Major Data Breach: Over 400 Million Twitter Users’ Data Allegedly for Sale

In a startling revelation, a hacker, known as “Ryushi”, claims to have acquired private details linked to over 400 million Twitter accounts. Demanding a ransom of $200,000, this breach has put celebrities’ data, including email addresses and phone numbers, at risk of exposure. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) is now probing Twitter’s adherence to data-protection laws in light of this significant security lapse.

The breach’s scale is immense, though its full extent remains unverified. Notably, The Guardian reports that data from high-profile individuals like US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and broadcaster Piers Morgan is among the affected. Twitter, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has yet to officially respond to these allegations, though cyber-security experts suggest this breach predates Musk’s tenure.

Cyber-crime intelligence firm Hudson Rock first flagged this data sale. Alon Gal, the firm’s CTO, believes the breach differs significantly from previous incidents, including a leak affecting 5.4 million accounts. Gal emphasizes the distinctiveness of this breach and the hacker’s unique approach to selling the data through a cyber-crime forum’s escrow service.

Exploiting Twitter’s Vulnerabilities

The hacker allegedly utilized a flaw in a system used for computer program interactions with Twitter. This vulnerability, patched in 2022, is also linked to earlier breaches affecting millions of accounts. The DPC, already investigating a previous breach, is intensifying its scrutiny of Twitter’s data-protection compliance, especially with the platform’s European headquarters in Dublin.

In an online post, the hacker highlighted the potential repercussions for Twitter, including hefty data-protection fines. This incident echoes Meta’s recent 265 million euro fine following a massive data leak. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has acknowledged the situation and is coordinating with the DPC to address these concerns.

As this investigation unfolds, Twitter faces significant challenges in managing this data breach, mirroring broader concerns about data security in the digital age. Read more on cyber security insights here.
